CHEMH-519:  Chemical Hazards

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This advanced course provides a comprehensive examination of chemical hazards encountered in environmental and occupational health settings. Students will explore the classification, toxicological properties, and health effects of chemical agents; the routes of exposure and principles of dose-response; the methods for assessing and monitoring chemical exposures; and the legal and regulatory frameworks governing chemical safety in the workplace and the environment. The course integrates principles of toxicology, industrial hygiene, and risk assessment to prepare students for safe and effective practice in environmental health, occupational safety, and public health. Emphasis is placed on the recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical hazards in diverse settings.

COURSE TEACHING OBJECTIVES

  1. Analyze the classification systems and toxicological properties of chemical hazards commonly encountered in environmental and occupational settings.

  2. Evaluate the routes of exposure, mechanisms of toxicity, and health effects associated with chemical agents.

  3. Apply risk assessment principles, exposure monitoring methodologies, and hazard communication standards to workplace and environmental settings.

  4. Assess the proper selection, use, and limitations of personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls for chemical hazards.

  5. Synthesize chemical safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and regulatory compliance frameworks for environmental and occupational health practice.

COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Classify chemical hazards according to established systems (GHS, NFPA, DOT) and explain their significance in environmental and occupational health contexts.

  2. Identify the toxicological properties and health effects of common chemical hazards, including corrosives, asphyxiants, irritants, carcinogens, and reproductive toxicants.

  3. Apply risk assessment methodologies to evaluate chemical hazards in workplace and environmental settings.

  4. Select appropriate exposure monitoring strategies, personal protective equipment (PPE), and engineering controls for specific chemical hazards.

  5. Develop a comprehensive chemical safety plan for a workplace or environmental health setting that addresses hazard communication, exposure monitoring, decontamination, and emergency response.

ORGANIZATION OF COURSE STUDIES

The course is organized into five study periods (typically 2 weeks each, though self-paced). Each period includes intensive reading of the assigned textbook, viewing of the supplementary video, and a short response paper or reflective assignment (500–1,000 words) reflecting on the material and its application. Students must contact the instructor for feedback after each period.

End of Course Student Feedback Form (all students must complete this form after receiving grade).
