INP-701: Infectious Diseases in Public Health Practice

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This doctoral-level course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles, practices, and challenges of infectious disease prevention and control in public health. Students will explore the epidemiological foundations of infectious diseases, their transmission dynamics, surveillance systems, outbreak investigation methodologies, and evidence-based prevention and control strategies at the population level. Key topics include the chain of infection, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, public health surveillance, outbreak response, vaccination strategies, antimicrobial resistance, and the role of global health governance. The course integrates theoretical frameworks with real-world case studies and emphasizes the application of public health practice to reduce the burden of communicable diseases.

COURSE TEACHING OBJECTIVES

  1. Analyze the epidemiological principles underlying the transmission, distribution, and control of infectious diseases.
  2. Evaluate the components and functions of public health surveillance systems for infectious diseases.
  3. Apply outbreak investigation methodologies to identify sources, modes of transmission, and control measures.
  4. Critically assess prevention and control strategies, including vaccination, infection prevention and control (IPC), and antimicrobial stewardship.
  5. Examine the social, environmental, and behavioral determinants of infectious disease emergence and spread, and their implications for public health policy.

COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the chain of infection and its application to designing targeted prevention interventions.
  2. Describe the key components of an infectious disease surveillance system and evaluate its performance.
  3. Conduct a systematic outbreak investigation and propose evidence-based control measures.
  4. Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of vaccination programs and other population-level interventions.
  5. Analyze the impact of globalization, climate change, and antimicrobial resistance on infectious disease threats and public health responses.

ORGANIZATION OF COURSE STUDIES

The course is organized into five study periods (typically 2 weeks each, though self-paced). Each period includes intensive reading of assigned chapters from the textbook, viewing of a supplementary video, and a short response paper or ethical analysis (500–1,000 words) reflecting on the material and its application.
