HPM-702: Leadership for Clinical Improvement

COURSE DESCRIPTION

HPM-702 focuses on the theories, practices, and evidence base for leadership in clinical settings aimed at improving patient outcomes, safety, and quality of care. Students will explore clinical microsystems, change management, team leadership, data-driven improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA), and the role of clinical leaders in fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The course integrates organizational behavior, implementation science, and health services research to prepare students for senior leadership roles in hospitals, health systems, and clinical networks.

COURSE TEACHING OBJECTIVES

  1. – Critically evaluate different leadership theories and their applicability to clinical improvement contexts.
  2. Apply quality improvement frameworks (e.g., Model for Improvement, Lean, Six Sigma) to clinical processes.
  3. Analyze the role of organizational culture, teamwork, and psychological safety in clinical improvement.
  4. Design strategies for implementing and sustaining evidence-based clinical practices using implementation science.
  5. Assess the use of clinical data and performance metrics for leadership decision-making and improvement.

 

COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Select and apply appropriate leadership styles to clinical improvement challenges.
  2. Lead a clinical microsystem through a structured quality improvement project.
  3. Facilitate interprofessional team dynamics to improve patient safety and outcomes.
  4. Develop an implementation plan for an evidence-based clinical intervention.
  5. Critically analyze clinical performance data to identify improvement priorities.

Organization of Course Studies

The course is organized into five study periods (typically 2 weeks each, though self-paced). Each period includes intensive reading of the assigned textbook, viewing of the supplementary video, and a short response paper or ethical analysis (500–1,000 words) reflecting on the material and its application.
